Penumbra is an adventure-survival-horror game that takes you into a mysterious mine where you have to discover what happened to the people there. Unlike most first-person games, in this one you will not have firearms to deal with the dangers around you, instead you will rely on the everyday objects around you in order to survive.

An interesting story from the very start

The game begins with a short narration from Philip, a physicist, who ventures into an uninhabited area in Greenland after coming across a letter from his allegedly dead father. As soon as he arrives there, he is put face to face with an unbearable cold that drives him to take shelter inside a mine that seems to be abandoned.
Exploring the mine, Philip starts to put together pieces of a story which lead him to understand about the existence of a psychoactive toxin and some mutated creatures. He encounters Red, a deranged man that ends up helping him advance in his search but at a high price, and with no end to the strange events that take place inside the mine.

Interact with your surroundings in an new way

Getting through Penumbra mostly relies on collecting various objects and solving puzzles. Using an advanced game engine, you can interact with almost every object around you. You can pull crates and move them, open desk drawers, pickup tools that you can later use to force open a door or fix a generator and much more.
The game puts you in situations where you will have to fight for your life but to deliver the good scares, it relies a lot on the atmosphere around you, and it manages to create a very eerie one. Objects you touch or step on make different sounds, your flashlight runs out, you have limited resources and with all that, you need to stay alert because you never know what lurks in the dark corners.

To sum things up, Penumbra is a game that offers a wonderful gameplay style, puts you in the center of a great story and will certainly make you jump out of your seat a couple of times.
