Description
In movies, it always seems like there is nothing else out there for humans when it comes to planets that can support life. Even if the conditions are right, vicious aliens enter the picture to ruin our chances. Despite all this, it’s still mandatory that we try, otherwise we truly won’t have anywhere to go once Earth becomes inhospitable for one of many possible reasons.
Try to explore as much as you can before you die
Orchids to Dusk is a game that encourages exploration, mainly because there is nothing else you can do anyway. You play the role of an astronaut stranded on a strange planet, with enough Oxygen to last you for a few minutes. In these minutes, you have the chance to look around and see what you are missing out on, as well as come to terms with the fact that you are about to die.
The story is basically non-existent, since there are no other characters or plot lines to follow. The astronaut doesn’t even have a name, and neither does the planet. However, the journey can be very calming and enjoyable if you need a few minutes to ponder. It can also be a valuable lesson in mortality, since you might learn to enjoy life a bit more once you are confronted with the idea of having a few minutes left to live.
Beautiful visuals and nice music to go along with them
It is worth noting that the game is apparently played online, although that part is a by fuzzy and not very well explained by the developer. In essence, it would appear that you can stumble into the corpses of other players that have explored the planet. Speaking of which, most of the environment is bleak and rather empty, but every once in awhile you stumble across an oasis of sorts, decorated with weird plants.
The atmosphere rests on the artwork and the soundtrack, due to the lack of a proper story, dialog or characters. Thankfully, the graphics are marvelous, and they actually make you imagine a distant planet somewhere in another galaxy. Furthermore, the soundtrack emphasizes the feeling of loneliness and desperation that takes a hold of you after the first few minutes.
A short, but enjoyable experience
All things being equal, Orchids to Dusk is more of an experiment than a complete game, but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy it. Moreover, you get the chance to meditate and think about whatever you like while the astronaut makes his way across the alien wasteland.
