Although you might think that it’s easy to scare someone with a video game, the truth is not that simple, especially if you aim to truly terrify the person playing it. Hence, a short jump scare might cause a flinch or an accelerated heartbeat for a few seconds, but there’s obviously no lasting damage. On the other hand, even jump scares can create the proper atmosphere and work great if you manage to integrate them properly.

Investigate a cow farm and solve the mystery

Milksoil Mystery is a top-down horror game in which you have to explore a dark environment and come up with an answer to the mystery you are faced with. It’s not a typical horror game, but the atmosphere is certainly pretty scary, at least if you are not too demanding in this regard. Moreover, it also features nice sound effects and a pretty unique story.
Speaking of which, you play the role of a man sent to investigate the mystery of some disappearing cows from a farm. In short, you have to explore the surroundings of the farm and find clues regarding what might cause the disappearances. Naturally, you also stumble onto a nasty monster that chases you around, which is the whole point of the gameplay.

Run away from danger instead of facing it

The monster in question cannot be stopped or fought, which is why you must run away the instant it starts chasing you. Thankfully, your character has the ability to sprint, which comes in handy when it comes to outrunning the ghastly apparition. Other than that, your other task is to investigate the environment and look for hidden clues or other characters that might reveal what’s happening at the farm.
Lastly, the graphics are nothing out of the ordinary, and they can actually be considered rather simple. On the other hand, the game was designed in a matter of days, which means that everything had to be drawn and animated in a rush. Even so, at least the sound effects are pretty scary, which is always good news in a horror game.

A neat experience for casual horror fans

When it’s all said and done, Milksoil Mystery is probably not going to win any awards, nor is going to cause long-lasting nightmares in its audience, but it’s a pretty interesting game nonetheless. In addition, it’s worth a lot of praise if you consider the fact that it was designed and built in only three days.
