Description
Video games are quite good at simulating real-world physics today, even if most of them seem to ignore this fact and present the players with a stiff environment and no kind of interaction. On the other hand, level design is much tougher to create when you have to take into consideration movable objects, not to mention the fact that all sorts of other problems make an appearance as well.
An open sandbox to let your imagination run wild
Boom Box is not much of a game, but it can be the perfect placeholder for one when you need something to relax with and not be constrained by rules or silly gameplay mechanics. Hence, this is more of an interactive physics engine than anything else, but it has the potential to turn into much more in the future, at least if more content is added down the line.
There are no missions and no characters to worry about, but there are a few areas of interest on the tiny map you can explore. As such, there are various spawning points and rooms you can visit, such as the one where you can spawn bouncing balls, or the one that allows you to create cubes. Bombs are an important part of the equation as well, depending on how much you enjoy explosions.
Simple controls and a few bugs to watch out for
You can interact with the game by changing a few settings regarding simulation speed, as well as a few other parameters that change the game in various ways. In addition, you interact with the game using a very intuitive interface, even if might not appear so at first. The lack of proper buttons and menus might be a tad disorienting, but you can quickly get used to it.
In regards to graphics, there’s nothing really to catch your eye, given the fact that the game barely features anything other than a few cubes and the occasional sphere. Moreover, there are also quite a few bugs that can ruin you experience, such as getting stuck in pits and having to restart the whole game, because there’s no quit button. Thus, it certainly needs more work and polishing.
A neat idea that needs more content
When it’s all said and done, things could certainly be better in Boom Box, but it’s not quite there yet. Hence, with a bit of work and dedication, the game could provide players with a lot more fun and entertainment.
