Description
Simple mechanics are not a sign of a bad game, since even the simplest ideas can keep the players engaged for hours on end if they are fun enough. Hence, it’s no wonder that the market is flooded by casual games sporting basic graphics and barely any stories, given the fact that match-three mechanics are in great demand nowadays.
Help a golem defeat the forces of evil
Hugars Quest is an arcade puzzle game with simple mechanics, in which you have to explore a frozen world and help a golem by the name of Hugar overcome a variety of obstacles in order to save his kingdom. The game features classic match-2 mechanics that challenge your memory, since the main goal is to turn tiles one by one and try to remember the positions of two of the same kind.
Each level has a different scope, on the other hand, which makes the adventure a tad more engaging than usual. Hence, sometimes you just have to cover a stretch of road, while other times you have to defeat enemies before they get a chance to do the same to you. In addition, in some levels you are challenged to open chests in order to get the loot inside.
Basic graphics and portrait-oriented window
Unfortunately, the mechanics do not change from one level to the other, which is a bit of a bummer. Even if you are working toward a different goal, the fact that you do the same thing over and over again can get on your nerves after a while. On the other hand, the game is too short anyway, so it’s not much of a problem when the whole thing is over in a matter of minutes.
Lastly, the graphics are fairly basic as well, and it’s also worth noting that you have to deal with a portrait window instead of a regular one. This is probably because the game was designed for mobile devices, but the mechanics are simple enough to work with a mouse as well. Not much can be said about the music, but that’s rarely an issue in games such as this one.
A great way to relax for a few minutes
In the end, Hugars Quest is clearly not an original game, but it features some nice concepts and short levels that are perfect for when you only have a few minutes to play. Thus, don’t go in expecting more than that because you’ll be disappointed.
