Description
Gravity is what keeps us from flying off the planet, and it’s a useful concept in video games as well. Obviously, some games can toy with it and provide the players with a chance to disregard it entirely, although people are striving to replicate its effects as accurately as possible lately. Either way, there are many ways one can implement gravity in video games.
Help a goose avoid obstacles
Gravity Goose is a fun platformer in which you control a goose with no wings, but which has the ability to bend gravity to its will. Unlike most platformers out there that abuse the concept, Gravity Goose does it very gently, in the sense that you have a lot more control over it. On the other hand, the whole gameplay is based on it, so it kind of had to be very malleable to begin with.
There’s not much of a story to keep you entertained, but it’s enough to know that you are a determined goose on a mission, and nothing can stop you from achieving your goals. As it happens, you are trying to go somewhere, but the way there is full of traps and sketchy passages. There are also a few enemies you have to worry about, which must be either avoided or defeated.
Simple graphics and responsive controls
Besides being able to reverse gravity, you also have the power to make it weaker or stronger, depending on whether you want to stay closer to the ground or perform longer jumps. Its strength is adjusted using the mouse scroll, which means that you have full control over how much gravity you’re dealing with at any given time. Some of the puzzles actually require you to have the gravity set at a specific level.
On the other hand, you need to be prepared to deal with basic graphics, because the game looks like it was designed in a couple of hours with a very rudimentary set of tools. On the other hand, it matters very little as long as you are having fun. While not all the levels are equally exciting, most of them are challenging enough to distract your eyes.
A great gameplay idea that needs more polish
All things considered, Gravity Goose is a pretty cool game, especially if you enjoy challenging platformers. However, it looks like it was designed two decades ago, which can be distracting from time to time.
