Description
Each platformer has a unique feel and atmosphere, at least if the developer makes an effort to make the game somewhat original. Hence, the controls are very important in order for the gameplay to feel fun and engaging, but the level design and the story are quite up there as well. As you might have guessed, it’s no easy task to make every one of these elements work together in harmony.
A world made of candy and a royal crisis
Sugar and Spice is a work-in-progress action-platformer in which you get the chance to explore a colorful world and defeat the monsters that try to plague it. Naturally, many of the gameplay elements do not work as intended at the moment, which is a bit of a bummer. On the other hand, the main idea is nice enough to be worth more effort from the developer in the future.
The story revolves around two kingdoms and two rival princesses, namely Princess Spice and Princess Sugar. As you might have guessed, you play on Princess Sugar’s side, and it’s your task to rescue both her and her crown in order to restore order throughout the kingdom. It’s not a great story, but then again it’s cute enough to help you forget about anything else for a while.
Colorful graphics and decent controls
The gameplay is all about jumping and dealing with enemies, although the level design is not phenomenal at this point. Your character can also shoot projectiles to deal with enemies, at least if you don’t feel comfortable stomping them. Some can’t be stomped anyway, so the special ability comes in handy quite often.
As for the graphics, they are obviously nothing to write home about, but then again they don’t need to be impressive either. In fact, they are certainly better than in many other indie platformers out there, but it’s a pretty basic graphic style, unfortunately. In addition, the soundtrack is not amazing either, although that’s the last thing the developer needs to worry about at this point.
A neat idea that deserves more attention
All things considered, Sugar and Spice is more than able to keep you engaged for a while, even if it’s not yet complete and it lacks a lot of features. However, it clearly has the potential to turn into something a lot better along the way.
