Description
Hot Diggity is a cute little game jam build that gets your attention only after you play a couple of rounds. At a first glance, it doesn’t look like much but it’s a captivating game that can even get addictive.
Simple ideas for big doses of enjoyment
In Hot Diggity you control a small drilling machine and with it you need to borrow as fast as you can for as long as you can. There’s a gigantic worm set to destroy the planet and it’s coming your way, it’s right on top of you. You can’t avoid it by going sideways so down is the only path to take.
As you dig your way through the ground, you will encounter pockets of minerals that can be gathered and used to upgrade your ship with extra parts. You can add engines, cooling systems, lasers and extra drills if that’s what you need. One of the fun parts is that there’s no right way to build your vehicle, you can add anything you want around the core.
It seems simple enough but its randomness makes it challenging
Building and digging are not going to trouble you all that much. Steering is. You see, apart from the simple dirt or hard rock patches, there are pockets of exploding magma. Hit one too many of of those and your digger blows up. Which means that you have to restart the game from scratch.
Avoiding those bits is easy at first but later on, things get complicated and since each round is randomly generated, you can’t learn it by heart. It’s all about the reflexes and intuition.
It could be really good if more work is invested in it
All in all, Hot Diggity is worth a shot for its fun gameplay and laidback tone. On the other hand, it could use a lot of improvements in the visuals department, you do get stuck now and again and a more features would do a lot for it.
