Description
Being a hero is not always a choice, especially when you are the only one who can do something about the situation. In addition, certain individuals are expected to play the role of the hero when it is required of them, as it was the case with knights back in the day. Naturally, everyone can be a brave hero nowadays, thanks to action-packed video games.
Return a stolen artifact and face certain death
Kingdom Champion is a 2D adventure game with platformer elements, in which the goal is to avoid the traps, kill the enemies and get to the exit from each level until the quest is completed. There are all sorts of enemies that try to stop you along the way, as well as various traps, but they can all be avoided with enough patience and dedication.
The story puts you in the role of a man by the name of Warrior Fortem, who is the prince of Regnum Kingdom and, obviously, heir to the throne. His mission is to bring back a powerful artifact stolen from his kingdom, a task which sends him on quite the adventure. Naturally, this is a fairly weak story, given the fact that it’s far from original, and there are barely any other characters involved in it.
Basic graphics and annoying gameplay mechanics
The most annoying part of the game is the fact that the character moves extremely awkwardly around the level, and it also takes some time to get adjusted to his attack motions. The sword attack is nothing more than a one-frame animation in which the character raises his blade and sits like that for a few seconds, which is both hilarious and frustrating at the same time.
The lack of proper animations is felt when you are merely exploring the levels as well, since it feels like you are controlling a cutout instead of an actual character. Hence, the experience gets annoying and boring after a few minutes, even if it appears like the levels are fairly challenging. Speaking of which, the level design is not horrible, but the basic graphics make them look worse than they really are.
An interesting platformer with too many flaws
In the end, Kingdom Champion could have achieved a lot more with the elements it had at its disposal, but unfortunately the end result is a very disappointing game. Hence, there are far better platformers out there to enjoy.
