Description
Community was a central piece in the evolution of man, because by staying together we managed to stay protected and form bonds that allowed us to eventually settle down and work the land. However, things were not always as easy for the early humans, given the fact that it was entirely possible for entire groups or tribes to disappear because of bad weather or various other environmental factors.
A lonely caveman looking for company
There was a Caveman is an action-platformer in which you play the role of a poor caveman left alone, whose purpose is to find other people and feel integrated once more. Naturally, the road is long and full of dangers, which is why he must find a way to survive various encounters with dangerous animals or perilous environments that punish him for the tiniest mistake.
In essence, the gameplay is all about jumping with precision from one platform to the other and making sure that you don’t fall prey to the monsters that roam the corridors. Some of these are just patrolling from side-to-side like in a classic platformer, but others are designed to attack on sight. That can pose a lot of problems if you also have to watch out for environmental traps at the same time.
Retro graphics and responsive controls
Your character has a number of possible options at his disposal when it comes to dealing with the enemies that attack him along the way. Hence, he can either use his bat to bludgeon his target, or he can throw various items at it from a distance, such as rocks or bones. On the other hand, avoiding contact can be useful as well, especially since you can perform classic feats like the double jump and the dash.
As for the graphics, everything looks like you would expect from a retro platformer, which means that there’s not a lot of detail, but the atmosphere is spot on. The environments vary a lot over the course of the levels, ranging from snowy fields to dark caves, which is yet another reason you won’t get bored. On the other hand, the action does get a bit repetitive every now and again.
Great exercise for platformer fans everywhere
In the end, There was a Caveman is not a breakthrough in the genre, but it’s polished enough to be fun and enjoyable from start to finish. Hence, if you like a challenging platformer and you do not mind the retro graphics, this can keep you busy for a while.
