Description
Nightmares can have profound effects on people, especially if they are recurring and they prevent the persons in questions from resting properly. They are usually triggered by some kind of trauma or similar experiences, but it’s always a struggle to get rid of them, mainly because no one has control over their own subconscious.
An art student is fighting her nightmares
Ceasing to be Her Demise is a retro point & click adventure game in which you have to solve puzzles by interacting with the environment and combining the items you happen to find along the way. The story appears to be the most important element, but it’s a tad difficult to keep track of it sometimes, mainly because everything is so cryptic.
On the other hand, you might need to be aware of what happened in the other two games in the series, because this is not really a standalone game. Hence, you play the role of Selina, an art student who is tormented by nightmares. She fights them by drawing things, and now she needs your help to get her things ready in order to start painting again.
Collect items and figure out how to combine them
As mentioned before, it’s very important that you understand how can you combine the objects you stumble upon as the story evolves. Most of them can be combined with each other, but sometimes you might need to include a few environmental items into the mix, such as a sink or something like that. It shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out, but it feels like a grind in certain cases.
As for the graphics, the pixelated environments remind one of the classics from back in the day, such as Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle. However, the mechanics are much simpler, and come to think of it, so are the landscapes and the story. The sound effects are quite moody, on the other hand, so the atmosphere should be pretty pressing at least.
A short adventure for puzzle enthusiasts
In the end, Ceasing to be Her Demise might catch the eye of puzzle lovers, mainly because it gets pretty tough after a certain point. However, the overall game is pretty modest in most regards, although still pretty refined for an indie production
