Description
Tough platformers are always going to have an audience, regardless of how advanced video games are going to be in a few years. Even if they are going to be played in virtual reality, gamers enjoy being frustrated by tough levels and challenging gameplay mechanics. Hence, new ideas are always born in the genre, some of which can bring the creators quite a bit of wealth.
Reverse gravity to avoid obstacles
Sawblade Panic is a tough 2D platformer in which your goal is to make it to the end of each level alive, by avoiding all sorts of spikes, sawblades and various other traps. It may sound pretty straightforward in theory, but the level design is what truly matters in this case, because the gameplay is not as original as it needs to be in order to differentiate itself from similar games.
There’s no story to worry about either, since all you need to know is that you have to get away from the traps. Speaking of which, your main power is that you can reverse gravity with the push of a button as many times as you wish. Thus, this comes in handy when you need to get over obstacles that are too big for the jump ability. Obviously, it’s quite difficult to learn how to properly take advantage of this power.
Tight controls and simple graphics
One of the most important things in a platformer such as this one is responsiveness, because nothing’s worse than dying because the input is not registered quickly enough. Thankfully, this is not an issue in the game at hand, because everything you do has an immediate effect on the screen. It’s also very accurate, so you do not have to worry about your character doing something else after a specific command.
The only thing that’s not up to today’s standards is the graphics engine, because the game looks pretty modest in every regard. In fact, most of it is just black with a solid color in the background, which is not exactly handsome. On the other hand, you’ll be busy trying to jump over spikes and avoiding sawblades, so this part may pass unnoticed.
A great platformer for the fans of the genre
All things considered, Sawblade Panic is a pretty enjoyable arcade platformer, even if it comes with a few minor flaws. Hence, if you don’t back down from a challenge and you enjoy platformers, this can provide you with quite a bit of fun.
