Description
Driving is not always a very fun activity, especially in big cities where there are thousands of cars on the road at any given time. Hence, street racing games are very popular, especially those that allow you to do what real world does not. Granted, it’s not easy to get the mechanics right in a fast-paced arcade game, but the fun factor is what matters the most anyway.
Overtake the traffic and survive for as long as possible
Highway Drive is a top-down racing game with arcade mechanics and simple controls, in which the only goal is to avoid the other cars and keep driving for as long as you can. There is no actual racing involved, but the challenge is fun enough to keep you engaged for a while. In addition, there’s a hard mode that adds even more cars, just in case you need to make things even harder.
One of the nice things about Highway Drive is that you can slow down and speed up at will, although there is obviously a limit for both of these options. Sometimes you need to use finesse in order to get through multiple cars, while other times it’s just easier to speed up and watch everything go by around you.
Choose the hard mode to add even more traffic
Although you have four lanes to use while driving, you can also drive on the opposite side of the road and extend your range with four more lanes. The game rewards you with extra points for driving there, but then again the incoming traffic is a lot tougher to avoid. Speaking of which, it’s a bit difficult to get points, especially since it takes a long time to increase your score.
There are a few problems to watch out for too, and one of them regards the controls. Hence, the car responds way too slowly to your input, and you do not move in increments, which is a bit disorienting. Hence, you have to hold the directional key for a while in order to change lanes, and you are never quite certain where the collision hitboxes are while passing by the other cars.
A fun game that gets repetitive
All in all, Highway Drive is pretty entertaining for a few minutes, but it gets on your nerves later on. There’s also no variety in the level design and no power-ups to spice things up, which is not good news in an arcade game.
