Description
Most of the time you can look at a game and understand the principle behind it, even if all you see is a screenshot. However, not everything is black and white in this world, and not every video game has a purpose or a clear idea at its core, which is how you get things like Goat Simulator. Even so, you can still have tremendous amounts of fun with a game that makes no sense.
Kill yellow monsters and stay alive as long as possible
UNROTTENSKULLS is pretty tough to describe in a few words, but what you should know about it is that you play from a third-person perspective and you control a tiny girl with a huge sword. In addition, it all takes place in a strange and colorful world that’s populated by huge yellow monsters, and it would appear that your job is to kill those monsters before they kill you.
It must be mentioned that the game is still pretty buggy and badly optimized, which means that you’ll have a tough time trying to enjoy it. On the other hand, the underlying idea is pretty interesting, and the abstract environments are tantalizing, for some reason. Hence, you can easily be absorbed by the strangeness of it all and find yourself unable to stop playing for a while.
Annoying controls and severe frame drops
The illusion comes crashing down once you realize that it’s almost impossible to control the main character with any precision, because all you can do is swing the sword aimlessly and hope that you hit your target. It doesn’t matter whether you use the keyboard or a gamepad, the result is the same. If it weren’t for this, the game would be much more enjoyable.
The graphics are certainly unique, especially when it comes to level design and the use of color in the environment, but there are severe optimization problems, which cause nasty frame drops. Because of this, you’ll often find yourself unable to see what you are doing, and it might not be worth the bother. The soundtrack is pretty nice, on the other hand, at least until it gets repetitive.
An intriguing idea that needs more work
All things considered, UNROTTENSKULLS is on the right path, but it needs a lot more work before anyone can take it seriously. As of right now, there are too many gameplay and control issues for the game to be enjoyable.
