Description
Tomb Raider is a neverending and constantly improving franchise that in all fairness, might not ever die. Although there are plenty of titles to choose from, with more appearing as years go by, fan-made games pop up from time to time. Such is the case of Tomb Raider Chronicles - The Lost Levels, a creation that takes you on a new adventure as Lara Croft.
Get ready for a bumpy road
The subtitle doesn’t necessarily mean that the game will be difficult, it really isn’t but there will be a considerable amount of struggle with the controls. First piece of advice, reconfigure the keyboard layout before you start the game. Some of the mapping might be against the idea of simple gameplay so having things the way they make sense to you is the best way to go.
Secondly, use the walk feature key as often as you can, especially when making turns or walking on ledges. Lara might not be 3 m tall but boy does she take large steps. If you’re not careful, you’ll easy walk off a platform you struggled a bit to get on.
Decent gameplay coming from a fan-made product
Tomb Raider Chronicles - The Lost Levels won't dazzle you with high quality graphics and there are plenty of glitches that are more or less subtle. For example, at one point you will be facing several gladiators at once but luckily for for you, one of them might just think it’s more important to run around in a circle then attack you.
Level design is interesting and in all fairness, it does feel like you’re playing some of the earlier versions of the game. Sound effects are decent and animations are ok too, as long as you don’t mind a somewhat stiff Lara.
On a closing note
Summing things up, Tomb Raider Chronicles - The Lost Levels has its fair share of shortcomings but then again it is a fan-made game in which a certain amount of work and time have been invested. So, unless you have at least a personal version of Snake in your game design portfolio, there’s nothing really bad you can say about it.
