Description
Synclox, a minimalistic gem of a game that was built in 72 hours which you have to try, it’s just wonderful. The previous applies to those who enjoy very short but very good games, for the rest, you still have to try this.
Less is more, and often enough, it’s also better
In Synclox you’re an unidentified pixel human who starts his journey on an island that’s calmly floating around in the sky between fluffy and also pixelated clouds. There’s no background story and very few things that make sense. It’s a great setup for a game that intends to make you want to explore and figure out what’s the meaning of it all.
Synclox is an imaginative rendition of a floating world that’s timeless, built using only straight lines and just three colors. It has a rigid form, somehow uneasy, but once you focus part of your attention to the sound of the wind and the relaxing soundtrack, it all takes a different shape.
The moment you realise that is the moment you hop into your pedal-powered copter and fly off to wherever.
Simple mechanics that make it simply fun
Synclox won’t hassle you with gimmicky controls or gameplay. Using the classic platformer keys you get to run and jump around, fly the helicopter and interact with some square clocks. The only thing you really need to be aware of is the fact that your flying contraption is fairly fragile so smashing into stuff (even mildly) is not something that needs to happen.
I won’t go into the puzzle part, how complicated it is or what you have to do because its title pretty much says it all. It’s not a complicated game but it is relaxing to play, it’s well built and unfortunately you might find the ending a bit underwhelming but it’s still worth every second.
A concept that actually needs to be transformed into a bigger game
Writing this might have taken me a bit more that finishing the game. It’s really short. And it’s really good. In all fairness, it left me wanting more puzzles, more answers. It’s a small game that’s purely pleasant to spend time with.
