Description
Survival games are usually designed to keep the players busy with the constant threat of death, especially since dying means a total restart in most cases. On the other hand, the total freedom to do as you please is the main attraction, especially in RPGs that allow you to customize your character and do multiple playthroughs.
Destroy monsters and beat bosses
Seal Breaker is a simple action-RPG with roguelike elements and a very short story, although the latter doesn’t affect the gameplay in any way. Thus, the only goal is to keep moving forward and kill all the monsters that try to stop your progress. To do so, you can make use of your weapons and spells, although your character’s attributes make a big difference as well.
As such, the whole thing starts with you creating a character and customizing his attributes, which come in four flavors: power, swiftness, resistance and willpower. Naturally, they affect different traits during combat, such as the ability to resist more damage, cast more potent spells, or just move quicker to avoid enemy attacks. Don’t expect too much of a difference in this regard, but it’s nice to have variety.
Basic graphics and simple controls
The movement is as simple as it can get, although the tiny view distance of your character can be an annoyance sometimes. However, the combat requires just your mouse buttons, although you have the option to quickly shuffle through multiple spell combinations. Since the game is inspired by Dark Souls, it’s only natural for it to feature some of the same mechanics, but don’t expect the same complexity as well.
Lastly, the same can be said about the graphics as well, because they are about as basic as they can get. The top-down perspective is not a bad choice for an action-RPG, but the repetitive environments can get on your nerves after a while. Furthermore, it’s sometimes difficult to tell where you should be going, although the maps are small enough for that not to be a huge issue.
A polished game that needs more content
In the end, Seal Breaker is not the kind of game that keeps you busy for hours, but it’s quite polished for such a small indie production. Thus, it would be nice to see more content in the future, although that is probably not going to happen.
