Procedurally-generated content is the future of video games, because people are getting tired of being forced to follow a linear path through the levels. On the other hand, it also gets more and more difficult for the level designers to keep up with the massive amounts of content in modern video games. Thankfully, the algorithms for procedural level generation are just around the corner.

Explore random rooms and battle a variety of enemies

Paradaim is an action-oriented RPG with an isometric view and a pretty colorful world to explore. The main gameplay elements are the real-time movement and combat, as well as the random rooms that are generated when you enter them. In addition, there are roguelike features as well, such as the fact that once your hit points hit zero, you have to restart the entire adventure.
There are problems at the moment, mainly because the game is not exactly finished. One of them is definitely the difficulty level and the combat system, and the former is greatly affected by the latter. In essence, you use both melee and ranged attacks with separate mouse buttons, but the melee attack is on the same button as the movement. Hence, you’ll often misclick and fail to cause any damage.

Gain random abilities and use them in combat

The levels are not the only randomly generated things in the game. Your character can have up to five abilities at the same time, and they are different with every playthrough. This also raises a few problems, however, because some runs may be more difficult than others because of it. There are also bugs that prevent you from using the abilities sometimes, not to mention the fact that there’s very little guidance to begin with.
Most of the issues originate with the flawed combat system, on the other hand, and with the fact that everything takes place in real time. While this would have been fine in a turn-based roguelike, the system is too chaotic and imprecise here, making it difficult for the players to enjoy themselves. Thankfully, these issues can be fixed in future versions, or at least mended to be less annoying.

A great recipe that needs finer ingredients

All things considered, Paradaim could very well be something to keep an eye on, even if it’s too frustrating and empty at the moment. With enough work and dedication, the game has the potential to turn into something decent.
