Description
Rockrocket is that kind of platformer which takes you on a calm journey. Not one in which you shoot countless enemies and dodge traps, but one of exploration and discovery in an environment that’s dark, strange and weirdly relaxing.
A platformer that uses atmosphere to its advantage
Right from the start, the mood of the game sets its tone. The cave is dark, seemingly empty and even the main character is barely visible. In the background, Rockrocket let’s out an eerie soundtrack that pushes you to start exploring.
The start is slow at first, like in any other game where there are no indications of any kind to guide you. Even so, you soon find out that collecting a sort of blue orb make you more and more visible, so you make that your task, to collect all of them.
However, the ones you see aren’t the only ones that exist because the cave is full of secret caverns and from the moment you find the first one, it’s clear that there is much more to the game than the apparent simplicity, and there is.
A simple game that rewards your curiosity
The controls to Rockrocket are basic, arrow keys to move left or right, X to interact with an object and Z to jump, no more, no less. It’s all you need to start wondering about to discover the cave’s secrets and story.
As you walk and jump around, approaching certain areas reveals new openings in the grand cave and it’s always exciting to find yet another blue orb because it gives you the feeling that you’re coming closer to unraveling the subtle story of the game.
There are no explosions, weapon sounds, swords smashed against shields or any other platformer ‘classics’, there’s just exploration and a bit of interaction from time to time. It’s a great way to spend a couple of minutes.
Worth every second of gametime and waiting to see what happens
If you’re into atmospheric games, Rockrocket will have you willingly studying every pixel of the cave in search of whatever is hidden. And each time you make a bit more progress and a new discovery, it grabs hold of you even more. Truly wonderful.
