Description
Even though pool is a very popular video game, it’s pretty difficult to stumble upon a true simulator that feels like the real thing, because the physics involved are quite complex. On top of that, the way you use the cue is pretty awkward to reproduce in a video game. Hence, arcade pool games are much more common, and they are also easier to get accustomed to.
Defeat the computer or play with other people
Pool 8 is a very simple pool game that allows you to enjoy a match or two without having to leave the house and go to the pub. However, the simplicity makes it difficult to put your skills into practice, given the fact that nothing reacts like in real life. In fact, the physics are pretty much in a league of their own when it comes to how poorly they reflect reality.
You can only choose whether to play against the computer or share the session with another player, and there are no difficulty levels for the AI. It’s also impossible to change cues or tables, so everything is as basic as it can get. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if the physics were more enjoyable, but they are a mess, and it’s quite frustrating to play.
Simple graphics and awkward controls
The other major issue is the camera, because it’s incredibly difficult to use it properly. You zoom in and rotate by simply moving the mouse, but all of this happens while moving the cue as well. Thus, you really need to demonstrate patience when it comes to taking the shot, because you have to see the table and get the cue in position at the same time.
It also doesn’t help that the graphics are very poor, since there are no reflections, and it’s sometimes difficult to tell one color from the other. The animations are nothing to write home about, especially when you consider the fact that balls just disappear when they are near a pocket. Lastly, not much can be said about the sound effects either, because there are barely there anyway.
Not the best option for pool lovers
Even if it’s free and it’s pretty easy to get into, Pool 8 is far weaker than many other alternatives, especially when it comes to physics, graphics and controls. Thus, there are no real reasons to stick with this one when there are far better games out there.
