Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit

One of the Lundum Dare game jam sessions had An Unconventional Weapon as a theme and boy did the creators got outside the box with this one. Its solutions are so obvious you’re going to miss them all at first.

Simple in design but good-looking

From a graphics point of view, Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit is simple and takes a lot from the old-school platformers. The pixel graphics are nice, and the game follows the same core gameplay that is customary for this genre. Meaningly, you get to jump from one place to another, avoid or kill enemies and collect stuff until you reach the end of the level.
In terms of audio, Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit sounds good. All the effects are crisp and with an authentic retro feel to them.

If unconventional is what you want, that’s exactly what you get

So, you start Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit and in a few seconds you face your first enemy. Pressing all the classic attack keys does nothing. Trying to stomp your foe Mario style provides no results. At that point, you start to wonder if the game is broken.
Looking up the info for the controls, you see “Mouse: Selection & Drag’n’Drop”. So you start wondering what you have to select, drag and then drop. A few to several minutes go by and nothing. Clearly the game is bugged, and maybe restarting it will do the trick.
You open the menu, you look around and notice two things. That the exit button doesn’t work and that the enemy in front of you is dead. And gone are the boulders that blocked your path. Now comes the part where you try to figure out what happened.

A wonderfully misleading game

Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit is an excellent little game. It offers only a few minutes of gameplay, but its approach to weapons and puzzles is refreshing. When you figure out the mechanics of the game your day will get much better.
Also, Mechanically Enhanced Nano Unit is short for MENU.
