Description
There’s something exciting about a game that challenges your reflexes and reaction times, because there are thousands of them out there already, yet people are still eager to try new ones every day. However, it’s not as easy as you might think to develop one, because there’s more to it than just making everything very difficult.
Collect keys and make your way to the exit
Fungi Frolic is a retro 2D platformer in which your only goal is to make it to the exit door as quickly as possible, although there is no time limit to bug you. There are special abilities and no intricate gameplay mechanics either, which means that the gameplay is as straightforward as possible. On the other hand, this can get boring after a while if you keep dying for some reason.
There’s no story to distract you either, since all you need to know is that your character has to make it to the door and unlock all the gates that happen to guard it. These keys are usually spread all over the level, which makes it mandatory to explore and bypass all the traps. Besides gaps full of spikes, you also have to deal with all sorts of monsters, even if they are not very bright.
Retro graphics and simple controls
The only thing you need to know about the controls is that you can walk and jump, which is about the only actions your character can take. On top of those, you also have a suicide button for when you get stuck, such as when you drop a crate by mistake and you cannot reach a higher platform without it. The simplicity is great most of the time, but there are other times when it might take the form of boredom.
As for the graphics, there’s nothing particularly special about them worth mentioning, except for the fact that they are designed to look retro. The quality is quite low, on the other hand, because there are far better looking games out there that are older than three decades. Even so, it should be a nice blast from the past for slightly older gamers.
Challenge your patience and your puzzle solving skills
All things considered, Fungi Frolic is not a top production, but it can keep you engaged for a few minutes every now and again if you do not back down from a challenge. On the other hand, there are far better platformers out there, even indie ones.
