Description
Tanks are still the best ground vehicles when it comes to battles, although nowadays drones and nuclear weapons make it difficult to believe that they would have a role in the next big war. On the other hand, constant technology improvements are being implemented on a regular basis, which is why tanks are now faster, deadlier and more resistant than ever.
Escape from heavily guarded areas
Battle Town is a top-down action game that’s very obviously inspired by Battle City, although it comes with a few interesting new elements as well. The goal is to get to the exit from each level and avoid the tanks that block your way, either by running away, or by simply destroying them. Both options are more difficult to approach than it sounds, but that’s also because of the clunky gameplay mechanics.
To begin with, your tank moves rather slowly, and it’s pretty difficult to change direction, given the fact that you have to let go of one directional key before the other can work. This is a bit counterintuitive and annoying, but it’s possible to get used to it after a while. Naturally, it’s difficult to see why would do that when there are better games out there.
Collect power-ups and destroy parts of the environment
Sometimes your way is blocked by walls, but some can be destroyed using your cannon. The enemies can destroy these walls as well, although they never have a clear strategy in this regard. In fact, they don’t have a strategy for anything, given the fact that they just randomly move and shoot in an attempt to appear organized. This is good if you do not want a challenge, but it gets boring and annoying rather quickly.
Lastly, the top-down graphics are nothing to write home about, since the colors are basic, and the tiles get repetitive after only a few minutes. Moreover, each level looks more or less the same, except of course for the maze layout. There is barely any sound to talk about, but that’s the least of the game’s problems, so it can be easily ignored.
Too few new ideas to be worth the effort
In the end, Battle Town is not exciting enough to keep you busy for more than a few minutes, not to mention the fact that the mechanics are rough and way too basic. On top of that, the graphics are simple and ordinary, so not even that can convince you to keep playing.
