Hockey is a pretty violent sport, given the fact that the players are allowed to tackle each other pretty hard and get away with minor suspensions. However, it’s still a game of skill and a team effort, which is why it’s so exciting to watch the NHL matches. On the other hand, they can always be made even more fun with the power of video games.

Mighty gods go head-to-head in a game of ice hockey

Super Valhalla Hockey is a small indie game designed to help you have a bit of fun with your friends in local multiplayer. It’s not a very complex game, but then again it doesn’t need to be if it manages to provide you with a few hours of fun. There’s not a lot of content, which might cause you to get bored in a rush, but then again it’s easier to stay entertained when you are playing with friends.
The match starts with each player choosing a god, although it doesn’t really make too much of a difference once they are all on the pitch, except for one special ability. You can play in either two or four players, and it’s recommended that you use Xbox controllers, because the keyboard is very difficult to get used to, especially since there doesn’t seem to be any way to reconfigure the controls.

Nice graphics and chaotic gameplay

As for the actual gameplay, there’s not a lot of depth unfortunately, which means that most of your time is spent chasing the ball, tackling the other gods and trying to put the puck in the net. It’s still a lot of fun in the right circumstances, but it would have been even better if there were some unique gameplay concepts at work.
Since the game uses Unreal Engine 4 as its foundation, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it looks quite nice, especially on computers powerful enough to render all the post-processing effects. Granted, there’s not much to see other than the gods and the ice court, but at least everything is smooth and quite detailed. The sound effects are decent as well, although some of them can become annoying after a while.

A great way to have fun with your friends

In the end, Super Valhalla Hockey is quite the well-polished video game, especially since it doesn’t seem to feature too many bugs. On top of that, it can keep you entertained if you happen to have a few friends over.
