Description
TV has blessed us with many heroes and role models over the years, even if most of them usually have some sort of special or even supernatural ability that makes them pretty difficult to relate to. However, it’s all about how they handle life in general and how likable they are to the public when they are not fighting demons or piloting spaceships.
A fascinating adventure alongside your favorite TV characters
A Nightmare in Sunnydale, California is some kind of all-star role-playing game, featuring Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the main role and a cast of various other iconic characters from other TV shows. Hence, you are joined by the likes of Dean Winchester from Supernatural, Hercules, Xena, and even Count Dracula, for some reason. Together, they must overcome and defeat entire armies of supernatural creatures, in order to get back to their respective worlds.
The story starts with Buffy waking up in a strange place with no memories of who she is or anything else from before. Soon enough, she meets up with Dean and together they try to figure out where they are. There are over a dozen characters that can join you over the course of the plot, each one of which has a different personality and a long list of special abilities that can come in handy during the combat sequences.
Turn-based combat and plenty of cutscenes
Speaking of which, the character development process is quite extensive and you have the possibility to customize everyone’s abilities, by spending the experience gained from winning battles. In addition, a variety of items can be picked up along the way, including healing potions and weapons that can be equipped by the characters. Everyone has a favorite type of weapon, so you have to pay attention to that as well if you want them to inflict the maximum amount of damage.
There are some flaws that need to be taken into consideration as well, because they might hurt the overall experience and become annoying sooner or later. As such, the plot is a bit shaky and it doesn’t really make sense most of the time, not to mention the cheesy dialog. In addition, the combat gets repetitive in a hurry and there are too many indigo encounters you have to deal with on a regular basis.
A valiant effort and some pretty exciting ideas
In the end, A Nightmare in Sunnydale, California is certainly unique and on the right path, but it needs a bit of polishing if it wants to impress anyone. Hence, the excitement of having all of those incredible characters in one place fades away quickly if the chemistry between them is not believable, not to mention the rather boring gameplay.
