Description
People liked to race way before cars were invented, but the practice has certainly gotten a lot better over the years. Hence, we now have incredibly fast cars to use on the track, and drivers have to really give it their best in order to get the most out of the engines. The rules have evolved as well, given the fact that people have strived to make motorsports as fair and as balanced as possible.
Reach the finish line first
Small Racers is not a revolutionary game in any regard, since it doesn’t feature any new mechanics, nor does it at least try to be mediocre when it comes to the gameplay. Given the fact that there’s only one track and one vehicle at your disposal, the whole thing gets boring in a matter of minutes, especially if you are a long-time racing fan and you are used to much better games.
There are multiple game modes to choose from, on the other hand, not that it makes too much of a different. Sprint events feature only one lap of the track, while circuit races challenge you to stay in front for multiple laps. Given the fact that the track is the same no matter what game mode you choose, it’s easy to see why the variety of modes does not have the desired impact.
Basic graphics and bad collision system
The physics are as arcade as they can get, although that wouldn’t normally be a problem in a game such as this one. It’s quite annoying to see how the car goes through walls, on the other hand, even if the vehicle-to-vehicle collisions are a bit more precise. The controls are fairly annoying as well, although they should allow you to easily win races, given the fact that the AI is very poorly coded.
Not much can be said about the graphics either, because as mentioned before, there’s only one track to play on, and it’s very repetitive anyway. There’s no challenge when it comes to the turns you have to negotiate, although some require you to brake quite a lot in order to avoid crashing into the walls. In addition, the poor visual quality might be a good thing for those who own an older PC.
Not many reasons to give this a try
In the end, Small Racers has too many flaws to be enjoyable, even if this is your first racing game. Thus, there are much better alternatives out there, regardless of whether you prefer arcade games or simulators.
