Description
Learning something new is either exciting or annoying, depending on your opinion on the subject you wish/have to get good at. Art is a tad different in this regard, because its whole purpose is to entertain both the artist and the one who watches or enjoys the movie/drawing/song in question. On the other hand, frustration is a big factor when it comes to the creative process.
Learn basic animation techniques
Animation 101 is an adventure game in which the main character’s goal is to learn animation, which is a pretty big commitment. Naturally, you won’t be able to become a pro just by playing the game, but there are a few techniques and examples that might give you a tiny idea of what the field is like. In addition, the game also puts your patience to the test with a few puzzles.
As such, it all starts when the main character decides to enroll in a class and take an animation course. However, it’s not all about staying in a classroom and paying attention to the professor, because practice is mighty important as well. Hence, you also receive a couple of assignments designed to improve your efficiency and get you familiar with the idea of movement through frames.
Try your hand at drawing pixel art
One of the assignments requires you to draw a couple of frames and obtain a fluid animation in the end. Naturally, you are provided with a blueprint that must be filled in, so it’s not as difficult as it sounds. You only have two pencils and an eraser at your disposal, while the rest of the process should be fairly obvious. On the other hand, there are a few bugs that might prevent you from completing the animation.
It’s also possible that you missed a pixel somewhere, but the game doesn’t inform you about the type of mistake you’ve made, and there’s no way to check a frame for errors. Thus, your only option seems to be clearing entire frames at once and redoing them. While patience is indeed a virtue, repetitive tasks become boring if they do not reward the players with something in the end.
An original idea for puzzle enthusiasts
Whether you are interested in animations or not, Animation 101 is certainly something to keep an eye on, because it shows potential. Not only that, but the story as a whole could evolve into something much more educational in the future.
