Description
Rigid Boy 2 is a platformer which, at a first glance, along with it’s simple look, seems to be an easygoing and rather basic game. You are right about the pixel graphics, they don’t get any better as you play but Rigid Boy 2 is far from being an easy game to finish.
Casual gameplay at its core, but the challenging type
In Rigid Boy 2 you have to help the little guy explore and pass through various types of lands that are filled with traps, dangerous jumps, zombies and a lot more types of things that can kill him. In that sense, Rigid Boy 2 is a classic standard platformer but there’s more to it.
It comes with several types of worlds to traverse, each one different from the other, and as you progress, every level gets tougher and tougher to beat. There’s no shooting, skills to learn, melee combat to use, it all comes down to jumping at the right time from the right place at the right angle.
The kind of simplicity that is used exactly how it should be
Rigid Boy 2 looks kind of harmless, after all, your character is a square with three dots for a face and a pair of legs but he’s really difficult to control. Jumping is easy, but jumping the right way in Rigid Boy 2 is the real challenge.
Not only are controls sensitive to how long you press them, your little guy is really bad at dissipating impact energy and as a result, he tends to bounce off a lot and off any surface. That makes it kind of clear as to why the game is called Rigid Boy but Bouncy Cube Dude would have been equally appropriate. Nonetheless, it’s one great feature (we’ll call it a feature) that raises the bar in difficulty and has you panicking and focusing at the same time, which is always fun if you play to win.
Moreover, apart from accidentally bouncing into spikes, he can also crack his little square body by falling from high enough places, or by ramming himself into a corner at just the right speed. It’s exceptionally fun how much care you have to take of this guy.
Worth every little pixel and all the tens of restarts
To sum things up, Rigid Boy 2 is a blast to play if you’re into platformers that are actually challenging. There is a chance that at times controls will seem flawed but as you get used to them, it will seem less so. And after you calm down, then the game changes just enough so you have to reacquaint yourself with the controls and rage a bit, again. Still fun though.
