Description
The moment you look at Eternum you get the retro game vibe and for a good reason. It takes inspiration from a number of 80s games and fuses several gameplay and visual features to form this excellent looking platformer. What’s even better is that it also plays as good as it looks.
Play as Arthur, the red underwear wearing adventurer
In Eternum, the plot is a standard one that has been used before but it still works for games with this setup. Arthur has lost everything he cherishes so he makes his way to Samarnath, who’s caves are said to hold five orbs that can grant him eternal youth. Obtaining the mystical items won’t be easy though, great demons guard them.
With that in mind, you set off on a journey that takes you through over 20 Bomb Jack-like levels. In each one, you have to collect all the chests so a portal to the next level opens and you can continue your journey. As expected, each level is riddled with evil minions that you either have to kill or avoid.
Fast-paced platformer action like in the old days
Eternum looks great and anyone who has played platformers from over two decades ago can confirm it. The gameplay matches visual quality because it runs smooth, glitch-free, and the intuitive controls scheme make it a blast to play.
Both audio and visual effects come together to recreate what once was, the classic platformer. Eternum also has a bunch of nice gameplay mechanics that make it even more appealing. Hitting the platforms under closed chest opens them so you get more points and bonuses, there are teleporters to discover and secret areas to uncover.
Arthur’s staff works well as a weapon but pick up a few powerups, and you can blast evil into oblivion with fireballs or set loose wildfire that kills anything in its path.
Eternum, a modern day classic you should play
To wrap it up, Eternum is worth every push of a button and second spent with it. It looks wonderful and it plays just as well. For the vintage platformer fans, this one will hit the spot.
