Description

Hat Cat and the Obvious Crimes Against the Fundamental Laws of Physics is the puzzle platformer with the longest name we’ve seen. It’s a tiny indie game that puts you in control of a simple and singular mechanic that you use to solve some fairly tough puzzles.

Simple in design, complex in essence

Hat Cat, let’s just call it that, is a game that looks rather basic, bad even if you want to be really realistic. However, with time, we’ve come to learn that looks aren’t always representative of the quality of a game, gameplay wise at least.
The visuals of a game do count but in this case we can make an exception. Hat Cat looks basic, but it actually pushes some nice and nicely complicated puzzles for you to solve. What you have to do is get a hat wearing pipe smoking cat to a tent. How you do that is the interesting part.

A rectangle that holds the keys to temporal and spatial travel

Hat Cat is all about thinking outside the box, or, in this case, outside the rectangle. The game uses only one mechanic for the entire gameplay and knowing how complicated it can get, it’s enough.
Mr Cat starts walking immediately as a level begins and won’t stop until he reaches the tent. You can’t control him in anyway, so the only thing left, is to make sure he doesn’t fall or get trapped. If he hits a wall, he turns around and walks the other way until another obstacle emerges.
What you can do is create a rectangle using your mouse and free-hand movement, and every time Hat Cat touches the sides, he teleports to the exact spot on the opposite side of the rectangle. It might be a bit hard to visualize so play the game.

Worth every second if you’re a fan of puzzle games

To end, Hat Cat might not strike you as a particularly interesting game and maybe in reality it isn’t. But it does get complicated in the good way, and that’s something puzzle fans should be interested in.
