For some reason, many people are excited for a post-apocalyptic scenario, whether it’s nuclear holocaust, zombie apocalypse or anything of the sort. Granted, this is because everyone assumes they’ll be amongst the survivors, when it fact the very meaning of the word apocalypse implies that most of the population is going to be eradicated, regardless of how prepared you feel to deal with the aftermath.

Explore a bleak world and watch out for enemies

Lambs on the Road is a 2D platformer inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”, the famous bestseller that presents a depressing post-apocalyptic world devastated by hunger and devoid of almost all human life. The game is much simpler than the book in many regards, but it tries to convey the same atmosphere, as well as present you with a tough world full of unpleasant situations.
The main goal is not to starve, since the world is almost out of of food and water, which makes every bit count in the fight for survival. However, you also have to deal with various puzzles and platforming sections, even if they are pretty simple, at least in the beginning. It’s important to keep an eye out for enemies as well, because it takes a few seconds to be overrun by bad guys.

Collect objects and use them to solve puzzles

Although it’s possible to interact with a few items along the way, you shouldn’t expect too much variety, given the fact that the game is still in active development. Most puzzles are pretty simple as well, in the sense that they require an object that’s only a couple of steps away. It would be nice to see more of a challenge, but there’s time for the concept to evolve as the game keeps improving.
As for the graphics, there’s nothing exciting in this regard either, which is actually a bit of a shame, given the potential of the subject. While the environments are indeed pretty bleak, they are also devoid of any personality, which makes it feel like a boring adventure game instead of an intense survival flick. The sound could use a bit of work as well, especially when it comes to effects and ambient.

An intriguing idea and a promising overall game

In the end, Lambs on the Road has a long way to go until it can be considered a finished product, but it appears to be on the right track. Hence, it’s definitely worth it to keep an eye on it, depending on whether you are in good terms with the genre or not.
