Description
Although most of them are similar in many regards, CCGs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so that everyone can find the desired blend of strategy and fun. Hardcore fans of the genre ache for complex game rules and many possible strategies, while casual players just want an enjoyable strategy game that doesn’t require insane reflexes like Starcraft does.
Short matches with small decks
Fortuna is a unique card game that focuses on tactics and strategy instead of flashy card collections or rich backstories. Hence, everything is designed to facilitate quick matches between you and the AI, using new mechanics and simple rules that are pretty easy to remember and learn. On the other hand, the simplicity can also translate into reduced replayability and other hardships.
As such, each player starts with a deck and five cards in hand, with the possibility to draw one card after every turn. The cards are ranked using colors and levels, which means that it’s important to keep an eye on these traits before choosing which one to play. There are two rounds to go through every turn, one for attacking and one for defending, so it’s a pretty balanced system.
Choose whether to defend or not
In order to win, you must make five cuts on the opponent’s side of the table. These cuts appear whenever you make a successful attack, but they can also be inflicted when the players run out of cards to draw. In fact, you can plan your strategy and sacrifice a cut in order to save cards for the later stages. UnFortunately, the tutorial is a bit unclear in regards to the rules, but you can figure them out after a few matches.
As for the graphics, everything is as simple as it gets from a visual point of view, but that shouldn’t affect your ability to have fun. It’s difficult to make out the artwork on the cards sometimes, which is a bit of a bummer, although it doesn’t really matter as long as you can see their rank. Moreover, it’s also disappointing to see that there’s no multiplayer mode, because the story mode gets repetitive rather quickly.
A neat idea that could use a bit more work
In the end, Fortuna certainly has potential, and the game is pretty good in its current state as well, but it would be much more engaging if it featured more content and slightly more complex gameplay mechanics.
