Description
Dead of Night is what you call a 0 budget production which was pieced together by a fan of horror games. It’s an indie game that was created to immerse you into a world that’s strange and dangerous, in a passive way.
A game that uses your own fear against you
The game starts off with a short presentation of what’s going on. Apparently you’re trapped in a strange place from where you can’t escape and there are no details about why you’re there in the first place. Everything you know is that you miss your family and that you will do anything it takes to get back to them.
That’s all there is to the background story, after that, you begin your journey. In Dead of Night you will have to explore your surroundings in the hopes of finding clues about where you are and how you can escape. There are some here and there but you will have to look carefully because they come in the form of notes, posters and even secret areas.
Basic first-person gameplay that’s acceptable
Dead of Night is played in a first-person perspective which means that your field of vision is limited to only what’s in front of you. The game is filled with strange noises that go off whenever you’re near a certain area or just wandering around and it really makes the atmosphere rather unsettling.
In terms of quality, you should be gentle with Dead of Night. You can walk through crates like a ghost and when you approach some doors to pass to the next section, the game freezes like it’s loading the next section. It’s a bit of a bother since there are other doors that simply open when you approach them.
Short and far from memorable
Dead of Night is mostly a teaser to something that could have been rather good after a considerable amount of work to it. It has a good setting, the right atmosphere but it just ends without actually giving you a test for fear.
